Primary Blog/Profit Isn’t a Mystery. It’s a Math Formula (And You’re Probably Skipping Steps)

❝Where the hell is all the money going?❞ If you’ve ever found yourself saying this at the end of a high-revenue month, this post is for you. Here’s the truth most entrepreneurs don’t hear enough: Profit isn’t mysterious. It’s math. But most women business owners are operating in the dark, crossing their fingers and hoping that somehow there’s money left over after the dust settles. Spoiler alert: that’s not a business strategy. That’s financial roulette.

The Dangerous Myth of “Reinvest Everything”

You’ve heard it before:
“Just reinvest back into the business.”
“Don’t worry about paying yourself yet.”
“You have to spend money to make money.”

These phrases are usually repeated by well-meaning friends or online “experts” with no P&L to show for it.

But here’s what I’ve seen over 20+ years of doing this work:

Reinvestment without a profit plan just becomes chaos wearing a strategy costume.

It leads to burnout. Resentment. Confusion. And no cash.

The Four Profit Leaks That Are Quietly Killing Your Business

Want to know where your profit is actually disappearing?

1. Reactive Spending
If your financial plan sounds like “I’ll just pay for it if I have money left,” you’re not planning—you’re panicking.

2. Underpricing (aka Discounting Out of Fear)
If you're afraid to raise your prices, you’re probably covering costs and not much else.

3. Team Bloat or "Nice-to-Have" Hires
That VA, OBM, or project manager might be amazing—but do you know their ROI?

4. No Profit Targets
Hope isn’t a financial strategy. You need actual numbers tied to goals.

Profit First Isn’t a Gimmick—It’s a Structure

You’ve probably heard of the Profit First method. And while I don’t think it’s a one-size-fits-all approach, the core idea is powerful:

Pay your business first. Not last.

Here's a simple example:
Let’s say you bring in $25,000/month in revenue.

Instead of spending and hoping there’s something left:

You allocate 10% profit = $2,500

You pay yourself 30% = $7,500

You reserve 15% for taxes = $3,750

The rest (45%) = $11,250 is for operating expenses

Now you’re making decisions based on math—not mood.
